One word that describes today: FINALLY! I have been anticipating this trip since last May, when I was offered a site leader position to AB West Virginia. Months and months of planning, uncertainty, and meetings have led up to this day.
And I couldn’t have asked for a better beginning. The road trip was fantastic (special thanks to Dennis and Zach for getting us here in one piece!) The weather, warm and sunny. The day, filled with lots of jokes and laughter (embodying Gesundheit even before arriving).
The Gesundheit staff members, Tyler, Kate, Billy, Jerome, and Rich were so welcoming and wonderful. The Farmhouse and the Dacha, with its charm and quaint made me feel at ease right away. The relaxed, easy conversation that flowed during dinner and that s’mores bonfire (hmmm s’moressss) foreshadows a week filled with smiles and happiness. The fears and expectations shared during reflection comforted me in knowing that we are all in this together. I look forward to learning about Gesundheit, my peers, and myself during this week!
Everything got off to a great start for our trip to West Virginia! Saturday finally came after a long, tough week, but it was so great. We hit the road earlier than planned, and we were crossing states like no problem. We stopped for food at Subway it smelled so bad outside, and then we realized there was a horse and carriage literally parked in a car parking spot… we were in Amish Country. We stopped for a break in Virginia and the weather was amaaaazing, about 70 degrees. We played a little bit of Frisbee at the rest stop, and were enjoying nice weather for the first time in six months. It was a good way to start this week!
Once we hit West Virginia, the drive started getting even more beautiful. Rolling hills, curvy roads. It was very different from what I imagined, and so incredibly different from what I’m used to in New York. We eventually made it to Hillsboro and found Gesundheit! The staff at Gesundheit were so welcoming and excited to get to know us. They had homemade pizza ready for us, it was so nice. Did we mention that there is no meat on Gesundheit? Vegetarians for a week. So far, it’s not all that hard!
The building that we’re sleeping in is really great… there’s a lot of common space where we can relax together and do reflections, and there’s a lot of dorm-style rooms. We had a bonfire outside, had a great first reflection where we were all exhausted from the day. This was such a great first day and I can’t wait to see how this entire week plays out! I can’t wait to work with the community and everyone else in the group throughout the week. So excited!
The beautiful West Virginia night sky!
Can’t believe this is our beautiful home for the next week!
