Tuesday night’s reflection consisted of a viewing of “The Real Patch Adams”, a documentary that further explores Patch’s mission to inject love, joy, and community into the healing process. A quote that stuck out to us came from Patch himself during a seminar he was facilitating in Sweden: “I want you to speak about the joy in your life. If you cannot think of any…lie.” While that statement drew many laughs, we felt that there was a deeper message behind it- how integral happiness is to your health . Furthermore, what gives meaning to your life? Patch’s message was about finding what. You are truly passionate about in life.

After breakfast yesterday morning, we engaged in our second round of “Tutto, Tutto” for the week (“Tutto” meaning “Everything”). “Tutto, Tutto” consists of cleaning the Dacha and Farmhouse from top to bottom. Afterwards, we got straight back to work, with each “breakout” group tackling their individual project: woodwork, sign-painting, garden design, and operations.
We were both part of the operations team and expanded on the work we had done with marketing and community outreach. While we weren’t getting our hands dirty in the woodshop, we were having great conversations with our UMBC friends and the staff at Gesundheit.
For lunch we had an awesome tortilla soup and cornbread. What followed was a rousing game of Settlers of Catan (Zach’s new favorite game)… He won (duh). After lunch we met with Erica and Rachel from Grow Appalchia who gave us some more insight into their organization and further reinforced the interest expressed for a community farm stand in this area. We all worked on our group projects through the evening until dinner.
Little did Helen (the birthday girl) know that our two groups were in the kitchen concocting sweet treats for a birthday celebration later that evening. Kate and Tyler, two of Gesundheit’s program administrators, invited us to the Library, a building beside the Art House. There, we surprised Helen with her birthday cake and square danced the evening away.
A few members of the group snuck away to the Art House to get CLOWNED UP and bring the rest of the party some hats a costumes to play with. Overall the day was extremely fun and the group is getting closer and closer every day.
We returned home and a some folks stayed up to play games or watch movies and others called it a night! Zach beat everyone at Settlers of Catan (again).
Only a few days left… let’s make it count.
