I am not quite sure where to start! This week has been so full of incredible memories and experiences. It was interesting to see what goes into the process of creating, drafting, and building a structure like a farm stand. It was a different process and way of thinking that I had never come across before. Although I was not that involved in the drafting process, I was happy and excited to be part of the building process. I also had no idea just how difficult and frustrating making a door handle could be. However the hours Diler and I spent slaving over this handle were totally worth it because it is a pretty kick butt, if I do say so myself.
Although there were a lot of funny moments throughout the trip, my favorite part of everyday was getting to reflect as a group. It is unusual for me to open up and talk candidly about my thoughts and feelings, but I felt so safe. I felt like I was in an environment free from judgement and scrutiny. The conversations we had about social justice, healthcare, and life in general were always so thought provoking and often eye opening.
I have come to understand that Patch Adams was not just coming up with a better way to approach healthcare but a new way to approach life. You should always show compassion to others and live a life full of laughter, passion, and loving relationships.
I have never felt more loved than I have felt this week. I feel so close to each and every member of this group and I would never trade this experience for the world. I want to say thank you to Zach and Alma for being such amazing advisors, to Helen and Dennis for being the most spectacular sight leaders, and to my fellow group members for being so warm and welcoming. Alternative Breaks has made such a big impact on how I view the world and my place in it and I look forward to hopefully taking more trips in the future!
