Well hot damn. Coming home feels like the movie Pleasantville in reverse.
My beautiful home, the fast paced New York City, guarantees that people, buildings, and cars will constantly surround you. But what The Big Apple does not guarantee is the feeling that you are a part of something important, that you matter, that you are loved unconditionally. It is important to note that we live in a city that specializes in monochromatic color schemes and an “every man for himself” attitude. Here, life moves all around you, and it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. During our week on the Gesundheit! property, my life was drenched in color. Despite living in a place that sits miles apart from others and is somewhat isolated, the folks at Gesundheit! understand the idea of closeness and community better than residents of an NYC apartment building––people who see each other nearly everyday without ever acknowledging each others’ presence. At GI!, a sense of community was created the instant we arrived, and it continued to build with each passing day. We all looked out for each other. What a beautiful display of humanity, you all are. Thank you. I carry in my heart a week’s worth of memories: a blur of uproarious interactions, punctuated by laughter, which kindles happiness, passion, and compassion. There was love, and I basked in it. For a week, the Gesundheit! philosophy of holistic and healthy living dictated our lifestyle, and I have never known a more therapeutic existence. They say that chronic stress can take years off your lifespan, and I think this past week just bought me back 4 years. …So, all things considered, that’s a plus!
